It depends on which Grammarly you mean. Grammarly's core spelling, grammar, and style suggestions are not generative AI in any sense that should worry an academic-integrity office — you're still writing every word. Grammarly's newer generative features (GrammarlyGO, "strategic suggestions," paragraph-level rewrites, AI Chat) are generative AI, full stop, because they can compose or substantially rewrite text on your behalf. Whether "using Grammarly" counts as "using AI" under your school's policy depends entirely on which of those two products you touched, and most policies written in 2023 didn't anticipate that Grammarly would become both.

According to Grammarly's own support documentation, the product now includes "Superhuman Go" AI agents, on-demand generative assistance that can "quickly compose, rewrite, ideate, and reply," and an AI Chat feature that can draft an outline or a full passage from a prompt (Grammarly Support: Introducing generative AI assistance). That's not an editing suggestion anymore. That's a tool that can write the sentence for you, the same category of capability as ChatGPT, just wrapped inside a familiar plug-in.
Two different products, one brand name. Most confusion about "does Grammarly count as AI" traces straight back to that.
Why this became a real problem, not a hypothetical one
The University of North Georgia offers the clearest cautionary example. Student Marley Stevens used Grammarly to proofread a criminal justice essay and was placed on academic probation for what her professor called "unintentionally cheating," receiving a zero on the assignment (USA Today). Her university had promoted Grammarly on its own writing-center website before the incident.
Notre Dame ran into the same wall from the other direction. Its Office of Academic Standards told Inside Higher Ed that professors kept flagging papers that "looked so completely different" from a student's usual work, only to learn the student had simply used Grammarly (Inside Higher Ed, Nov. 2024). Notre Dame's response, effective fall 2024, was to explicitly fold "AI-powered editing tools like Grammarly and WordTune" into any professor's generative-AI ban, unless that professor says otherwise. As Notre Dame's Ardea Russo put it, faculty are "all over the place" — some encourage Grammarly for everything, others ban it outright, and students are left guessing which rule applies in which class.
That's the real cost of an ambiguous policy: not villains gaming the system, but honest students getting burned by a tool their school handed them.
What actually gets flagged — and why a blanket answer fails
Here's the part that matters if you're trying to protect yourself, or trying to write a policy that doesn't accidentally punish honest editing: AI detectors don't see "Grammarly." They see text, and they score how statistically predictable that text is. Grammarly's basic corrections barely move that needle — you fixed a typo, the underlying sentence structure and word choices are still entirely yours. Grammarly's generative rewrite features move it a lot, because the model chose the words, not you.
A 2025 peer-reviewed study on detector reliability found that when AI detectors were used individually, they still produced meaningful false-positive rates on genuine student writing; when the same detectors were used in aggregate — cross-checked against each other rather than relied on alone — the false-positive rate dropped to nearly zero (Hyatt et al., *Advances in Physiology Education*, 2025). That single finding explains a lot of the Grammarly confusion: a single detector reacting to a heavily-edited paragraph can look identical to a false alarm, even when nothing generative happened. Punishing on one score alone is exactly the failure mode that study warns against.
This is also why "just ban Grammarly" isn't a clean fix. A student who ran spell-check and accepted three comma corrections did not do anything resembling AI writing. A student who fed a paragraph into AI Chat and pasted back the rewrite did. Treating those as the same offense is where academic-integrity policy breaks down, and it's exactly the gap a good detector needs to help close rather than widen.
What a fair policy — and a fair detector — should actually check for
If you're an educator writing (or rewriting) an AI policy, the useful question isn't "is Grammarly allowed." It's: does this assignment permit generative assistance, and if so, how much? A policy stated in those terms survives Grammarly's next feature update, and the next tool after that.
If you're a student trying to stay safe, the practical version is simpler: spelling, grammar, and style corrections are not the risk. Anything with "rewrite," "compose," "generate," or "AI Chat" in the button label is.
